Investing in the future

Shore Porters unites pride in its roots as one of the world’s oldest transport companies with a commitment to investing in the future. This is evident in the company’s recent investment in Sage technology.


As the company’s previous software package for finance and accounting and reports production approached end of life, Shore Porters went out to market for a new, more user-friendly alternative. With several people in the business reporting a positive experience of Sage software and as an industry-standard product, Sage soon became a front-runner.

We have live, intuitive financial and management information any time we need it. We can quickly identify if we need to step up our performance or adjust our pricing to generate extra turnover.

Support during implementation and beyon

The work went forward to implement the latest version of Sage 200cloud, hosted on a server within the business, with the aim of going live by Shore Porters’ financial year-end in December. This is always a very busy period for the business. Fortunately, the company’s designated Pinnacle Sage 200cloud Consultant provided every support to meet the deadline.

Richard recalls, “Throughout the design and implementation process, Pinnacle’s Sage 200cloud Consultant June Terris managed the project, making sure we knew what we had to do and what information we needed to provide to facilitate the timetable. Then, in the first week of the go-live, she came on-site to check the data transfers were successful, to answer any questions and, generally, be at our side to ensure we were comfortable with our new system and our users were trained up and ready to crack on.”

June Terris has since visited the Aberdeen office again to tailor the software for maximum impact, including customising Richard’s desktop so he sees only what he needs to see.

Keeping control of the business

Five people now use the Sage 200cloud-based system for day-to-day finance and accounting functions. Importantly, the system is an instant source of information on profit & loss accounts and management figures. Richard and his fellow partners can log in at any time to view the monthly position, rather than reviewing the situation retrospectively at the end of the month, as was previously the case, when it may be too late to take action.

Time-savings and efficiencies

Richard has already observed the greater efficiencies working with Sage has brought. “On the old system, we had to duplicate manual data entry. This was very time-consuming and we were surrounded by mounds of paper.”
